Leonov classEdit

Leonov class science vessel

The final class of Terran Deep Space Command science vessels before Terra's space fleet was incorporated into the Stellar Federation Starfleet, the Leonov class ships were an attempt to combine all the best features of the technologies of Federation worlds for an exploration and discovery role.  These ships gave many years of useful service before being prematurely retired due to hull stress fractures and the obsolescence of their propulsion systems.

Bayern classEdit

When Starfleet's Leonov class research ships prematurely reached the end of their useful lives, Starfleet found itself with a sudden shortage of science vessels suitable to carry out the exploration and research work mandated by its charter.  While the new Verne class exploration vessels had already been approved, the first of these ships was not due to be completed for some years, and it was impractical to refit the remaining Leonov class again.  While some of the research could be done by other ships in the fleet, Starfleet desperately needed vessels with dedicated scientific capacity, and building an interim stop-gap class from scratch was impractical.

Starfleet decided that the best solution was a conversion of an existing class of ship with the range and capacities required.  As a result, six Glenrowan class frigates were refitted as science vessels to meet Starfleet's demands after the type was superseded by the Balmoral class.  The main changes were removal of most of the weaponry, replacement of the original warp nacelles, expanded interior capacity (with a reduction in complement from 200 to 145, as labs were added and the accommodation was upgraded from military to civilian spec), as well as the addition of the main sensor array mounted on the engineering section.  These ships were re-designated as Bayern class science vessels.

Verne classEdit

Verne class science vessel
Verne sketch

The latest and most capable science and exploration ships, the Verne class ships of Starfleet are also some of the largest in the fleet.  Although shorter than Changi class, the Verne class actually has more mass due to the four cargo pods and associated radiation shield mounted on the central axis, requiring four of the latest Hamilton Industries warp engines to be fitted.  While these ships have several design features that were later incorporated into the Changi class heavy cruisers, the Verne class ships are not warships, being primarily designed for a long endurance scientific and exploration role.  Replacing the obsolete Leonov class and complementing the interim Bayern class science vessels, these massive exploration ships are intended to "seek out new worlds and new races" for decades to come.

Special-purposeEdit

Argus classEdit

Argus class Spaceborne Warning and Control Vessel
Argus sketch

After the disastrous Stariionae attack on Chakona in 2333, the subsequent inquiry into the affair found that the Stellar Federation Starfleet was severely deficient in the area of sensing capability, especially in the hyper-space realm.  The Science Corps has advanced a proposal for a surveillance vessel meeting the requirements for long-range mobile sensing, which involves mounting a retractable Stannus-Chakra hyper-spatial detector array on the hull of a modified Verne class science vessel.  The Vernes' drive system would provide power for the array so no modifications to the power system would be required.

In order to bring the Argus class online as quickly as possible, three Verne class hulls already on the slipways at Syria Planum will be completed as Arguses instead.  The Verne class designations thus replaced will be pushed back to future hulls.

Heavy cruisersEdit

Changi classEdit

Changi class heavy cruiser
Changi sketch

The pride of Starfleet, the Changi class heavy cruisers are possibly the most powerful ships that exist today in the Stellar Federation.  These magnificent vessels were built in response to a requirement for a long-range heavily armed capital ship capable of acting in a semi-autonomous role to defend the Stellar Federation's expanding borders.  The two examples of this class currently in service were built at the Syria Planum shipyards on Mars.

Legacy classEdit

Legacy class advanced cruiser

The disastrous encounters with the Stariionae in the latter half of 2333 brought to light significant shortcomings in Starfleet technology and capabilities, and key vulnerabilities that the Stariionae were able to exploit, to lethal effect.  In subsequent years, efforts to address these weaknesses, and prepare Starfleet for the possibility the Stariionae would return someday, let to a sort of "arms race" in the development of new starships and associated technology.  After years of intense competition, Chakat Tigerstripe's design firm won the contract with a revolutionary new design.

The Legacy class is a work of art on the outside, and a technological marvel on the inside, incorporating all the latest advances in every field.  It is both a high-speed battleship and a deep-space explorer, intended to excel at every mission asked of it.  This is the shape of things to come...

Light cruisersEdit

Biscay classEdit

Biscay class light cruiser

Predecessor to the Changi class heavy cruiser in the Stellar Federation Starfleet was the Biscay class light cruiser.  Midway in size and capacity between the Glenrowan and Changi class ships, the Biscay class cruisers carried the flag of the Stellar Federation for many years, and many of their revolutionary design features in weaponry and shielding were later incorporated in the Balmoral class frigate design.  However, the chief weakness of the Biscay class was a lack of range: while not being a problem when the ships were built, in later years the expansion of the Federation meant that their endurance was severely taxed.  It was chiefly this shortcoming of these otherwise fine ships that prompted the development of the Changi class.

FrigatesEdit

Glenrowan classEdit

Glenrowan class frigate

Predecessors of the Balmoral class, the Glenrowan-class frigate was the first Starfleet capital ship common design (previously, most member worlds of the Federation built their own ships, which created a support logistical nightmare).  It was also the first class of ship to use the (then) advanced Hamilton Industries lightweight warp engines, a product of the joint Chakonan and Voxxan supra-luminal research laboratories, which gave the Glenrowan class ships an edge in performance over their predecessors.  Unfortunately, it was found that the original warp engines had a correspondingly shorter service life, which necessitated the early overhaul and eventual retirement of these versatile ships.  The quality of the hull design did however allow the conversion of several Glenrowan class frigates to science vessels (the Bayern class) to address Starfleet's requirements between the retirement of the Leonovs and the commissioning of the Verne class exploration vessels.

Balmoral classEdit

Balmoral class frigate

The Balmoral class frigate is the workhorse of today's Starfleet.  Designed primarily for a policing role in Federation star systems and shipping lanes, Balmoral class ships have a long and enviable service record as well as a reputation for toughness in battle.  These ships replaced the aging Glenrowan class vessels and are still in production.
