Axel Slade is a human male that captains the starship Black Dragon in the story "Becoming Snowblind".
During a dogfight near mars, the pilot's cabin of his fighter took a direct hit from a plasma cannon. The fighter was directly linked to his mind at the time, causing his consciousness to be downloaded into the fighter's computer. Once the fighter was back on board the Black Dragon, Axel moved to the main computer and lived as such for several months until building a body out of nanites.
Axel eventually becomes Chakat Snowblind.
